India’s Green Energy Mission

Infrastructure
Government & Public Initiatives for Sustainable Energy

As the world moves towards next-generation renewable fuels, two important technologies are emerging globally: HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).

  • HVO is a high-performance diesel substitute produced by treating vegetable oils and fats with hydrogen. It is compatible with existing diesel engines and has lower emissions.
  • SAF is a renewable aviation fuel derived from sustainable feedstocks that significantly reduces the carbon footprint of air travel.

Currently, India does not have any commercial HVO or SAF production units due to the high capital investment and greater production costs compared to conventional fuels. However, in the near future, India is expected to embrace these advanced biofuels — just as Europe is doing — in its pursuit of a cleaner, greener energy future.

To protect public health and support clean energy, the Government of India, through the FSSAI's RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative, restricts the reuse of cooking oil beyond three cycles. Repeated use of oil can lead to the formation of harmful compounds and serious health risks.

Restaurants, food businesses, and even households are encouraged to dispose of used oil only through FSSAI-licensed RUCO collectors or certified biodiesel manufacturers like Solona Biofuels Limited. This ensures that waste oil is diverted from the food chain and transformed into clean, renewable energy — instead of being used for adulteration in food.

In addition, the Government of India has made it mandatory for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to blend biodiesel with conventional diesel to reduce air pollution. Companies using biodiesel directly for blending can avail 12% GST input, benefiting both the environment and operational costs.

By producing biodiesel from waste oil, Solona Biofuels not only helps prevent health hazards but also contributes to India’s clean energy mission.

Ethanol is already blended with petrol, and the government’s long-standing commitment is now extending to diesel. However, due to limited UCO availability, this transition is progressing steadily. Our SEZ plant plays a pivotal role in fulfilling this national goal.

We also encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and other green alternatives to reduce pollution and create a healthier, sustainable future for the next generation.
